Tether-Backed Utexo Plans USDT Return to Bitcoin in October

Tether-backed project Utexo plans to begin issuing USDT on Bitcoin in October, more than a decade after the token first launched there, CoinDesk reported. Utexo co-founder Viktor Ihnatiuk told the publication that the project received a commercial license to issue USDT and use Tether’s trademark.

How will Utexo bring USDT to Bitcoin?

Utexo plans to use RGB, a protocol for issuing assets on Bitcoin. Tether announced plans to launch USDT on RGB in August 2025, saying the protocol would let users hold and transfer the stablecoin alongside bitcoin.

CoinDesk reported that RGB uses client-side validation, keeping most transaction data off Bitcoin’s public ledger. Bitcoin’s ledger is used to prove ownership, while transaction details remain between the parties. Utexo plans to offer infrastructure through APIs, software development kits and cloud services for exchanges, wallets and payment providers.

What could users do with USDT on RGB?

Utexo told CoinDesk it is targeting private USDT transfers, direct swaps between bitcoin and USDT, and loans backed by bitcoin without wrapping it on another blockchain. These are planned uses; the report does not establish that they will be available when issuance begins.

RGB assets are tied to Bitcoin’s unspent transaction outputs, or UTXOs. CoinDesk reported that Utexo cannot freeze a UTXO in the same way Tether can freeze an address on Ethereum. Instead, Utexo says it would blacklist UTXOs linked to sanctioned or illicit activity and share that information with exchanges and other providers.

CoinDesk reported that Utexo plans to extend USDT to Bitcoin’s Lightning Network after the initial launch. The October issuance date and the timing of that expansion remain plans; the report did not confirm that either has gone live.
