To repay crypto loan interest, convert enough of another asset into the token you borrowed, then send that token to the lending protocol. Interest usually increases the debt balance in the borrowed asset, so the repayment target is the updated balance shown by the protocol.
Check the protocol’s current debt figure before swapping: interest may accrue between checks, and the displayed amount can change. For the swap mechanics and route checks, this quickswap guide to converting assets for loan repayment expands on the steps behind sourcing the repayment token.
Why does interest need the borrowed token?
In many crypto lending markets, the protocol records principal and accrued interest as a debt in the asset borrowed. If the loan is in one token and your wallet holds another, having enough value in the second token does not by itself settle the loan; you need to acquire the debt asset first.
Repayment rules vary by protocol. Some interfaces allow partial repayment, while others may require a particular asset or account action. Read the repayment screen and confirm whether it applies the amount to interest first, principal first, or the total debt under the contract’s rules.
How do you convert another token for repayment?
Use a swap on the same network as the loan to exchange a wallet asset for the borrowed token. Before confirming, compare the amount you will receive with the debt due, including the swap fee and any network transaction fee.
- Open the loan position and note the borrowed token and current total due.
- Choose a wallet asset to exchange, then set the borrowed token as the output.
- Review the quoted output, price impact, fees and network before confirming.
- Return to the loan position and repay, leaving a small balance for any required transaction fee.
A quote can change before execution, so leave a margin above the amount due where practical. If the swap yields too little, make another conversion or use the protocol’s stated repayment options; do not assume the remaining debt has been cleared.
What should you check before submitting repayment?
Confirm the network, token contract and destination shown in the lending interface, then check the final repayment amount and wallet balance. A token with a similar name on another network may not be accepted, and a swap does not repay the loan automatically.
After confirmation, wait for the transaction to complete and check the position’s debt balance again. If it still shows an amount due, repay the remainder according to the protocol’s instructions; the final balance and any interest update depend on that protocol’s accounting and transaction timing.
