Ledger unveils $899 Atom device after wallet thefts

Ledger unveiled its Atom security device in Paris on Oct. 15, pairing Android apps with a separate system for sensitive tasks after modified Ledger wallets were linked to cryptocurrency thefts. The company’s announcement says the device is designed to run everyday apps while Ledger OS handles approvals for actions such as signing transactions.

The Atom is still in development. Ledger says its estimated delivery is Q2 2027, while The Block reports that regular orders will cost $899 after launch; a Founders Edition reservation costs $849 with a refundable $100 deposit.

How will Atom handle crypto transactions alongside Android apps?

Atom switches between Standard Mode, which runs Android apps, and Secure Mode, where users review and sign transactions, The Block reported. Ledger says the device uses a secure chip and screen, and its announcement says users must provide final approval for sensitive actions.

The device will also include Solana Mobile’s Seeker app, according to Ledger, and Ledger says its Agent Intent system will let users review requests from AI agents. The company says a physical switch cuts power to the camera and microphone.

What is confirmed about the theft linked to the launch?

Ledger says attackers modified genuine devices with hidden components designed to capture recovery phrases during setup, then returned the devices to distribution through resellers in Southeast Asia. The company says its chip, operating system and servers were not compromised.

The Block reported that on-chain researchers linked the incident to more than $86 million in suspected losses, a total Ledger has not confirmed. Ledger’s account says it is working with law enforcement and the security community to trace funds and identify the attackers’ infrastructure.

When will Atom ship, and what remains unresolved?

Ledger estimates Q2 2027 delivery and says the date may change. The company has not confirmed the total losses; The Block reported that Ledger also had not said how the unauthorized hardware entered reseller stock or whether other resellers were affected.

Ledger says it will publish more details about the attack and share technical findings when possible. Atom’s final specifications, features and price may change before launch, according to the company.
