Fairshake backs 32 House candidates as crypto bill stalls

Fairshake said Monday, Oct. 5, it will support 32 House candidates in November’s midterm elections, with six receiving $1 million each, according to the Associated Press report. The slate includes 19 Republicans and 13 Democrats; all 32 supported legislation that the crypto industry counts among its priorities.

The announcement comes after Senate Democrats helped block the CLARITY Act, which sought to establish a federal regulatory framework for digital assets. Fairshake and its affiliates reported about $120 million in cash on hand at the end of August, the AP reported.

Which House members will get the largest backing?

Fairshake plans to spend $1 million each supporting Democratic Reps. Janelle Bynum of Oregon, Steven Horsford of Nevada and Derek Tran of California. Republicans French Hill of Arkansas, Bryan Steil of Wisconsin and Bill Huizenga of Michigan are set to receive the same amount, according to the AP.

The group did not disclose how much it plans to spend on the other 26 candidates. Fairshake’s support is outside spending; the AP did not specify how it will be divided among advertising, voter outreach or other activities.

Why is the group backing candidates from both parties?

Fairshake says it backs candidates who support crypto policy across party lines. Spokesperson Geoff Vetter told the AP that Fairshake and affiliated groups spent $40 million supporting 29 Democrats and $31 million supporting 28 Republicans in primaries and special elections this year.

The industry is looking to the next Congress to revive legislation that stalled this year. The CLARITY Act’s failure leaves that effort unresolved, while the slate backs lawmakers who supported the industry’s priority legislation.

Will Fairshake spend more before November?

The group has also pledged nearly $30 million against Democratic Senate candidate Sherrod Brown in Ohio, who is challenging Republican Sen. Jon Husted. Fairshake has not said whether it will make additional House or Senate spending commitments before the election, the AP reported.

The House slate sets out support for 32 candidates, but the total spend on 26 of them remains undisclosed. Further campaign commitments and the path for stalled crypto legislation are still open questions.
