Canonical Means Who Controls the Claim
Canonical identifies the token recognized as authoritative on a chain, while other bridged versions remain claims that depend on a bridge’s custody and code.
Canonical means the chain or contract recognized as the token’s source of truth; a bridged coin is usually a claim on that asset, not the original token. That distinction decides who can redeem, which markets accept the coin, and who absorbs the loss when a bridge fails. A canonical token has an issuer, contract, and redemption path the surrounding ecosystem treats as authoritative. A wrapped copy has a promise behind it. The promise may be sound, but it is still exposed to bridge custody, validator signatures, upgrade keys, liquidity, and fees.
How does a bridge create a token?
A lock-and-mint bridge creates a destination token by holding the original asset in a source-chain contract and issuing a matching representation elsewhere. Deposit 100 USDC into the bridge’s Ethereum vault, and the bridge may mint 100 bridged USDC on another chain. To return the funds, the user burns the destination tokens and asks the bridge to release the locked USDC. The supply relationship is mechanical: 100 tokens locked should support 100 tokens minted, minus any fees.
That token is not made canonical merely because its ticker says USDC. Its status depends on who issued it and which contracts wallets, exchanges, lenders, and decentralized applications recognize. A second bridge can create another “USDC” on the same chain, backed by a separate vault and a separate set of operators. Both may trade near one dollar until a redemption problem exposes the difference.

Users should also inspect the bridge’s control surface. A multisig with five signers and a three-signature threshold can halt withdrawals or approve upgrades; a validator network may impose a different quorum. Canonical status therefore belongs to the institution or protocol controlling recognition and redemption, not to whoever copied the symbol first. A bridge can make assets usable across chains, but it cannot erase the difference between ownership of the original token and ownership of a claim. Treat every cross-chain balance as a specific contract with a specific exit, and “canonical” becomes a verification question rather than a marketing label.
